4 SOLDIERS ARE ARRESTED IN BURKINA FASO FOR A COUP ATTEMPT
The
junta in Burkina Faso has alleged an attempted coup.
According
to the junta, which toppled a military dictatorship to take control, an effort
by certain Army officers to grab power and plunge the country into turmoil was
foiled.
Investigations
will aid in identifying the perpetrators of this conspiracy, which had the
diabolical purpose of destroying the institutions of the Republic and producing
instability in our country.
According
to a statement issued by the regime's spokesman, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel
Ouedraogo, "officers and other alleged actors involved in this
destabilization attempt have been arrested, and others are actively
sought."
The
military administration announced that it will strive to throw as much light on
this scheme as possible and expressed concern that "officers whose oath is
to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature."
Two
were claimed to be fleeing arrest, while four were said to be detained.
The
regime launched an inquiry after obtaining "credible allegations about an
officers-involved plot against state security," according to the
statement. We deplore that officers whose duty is to defend their nation have
been involved in a project that tries to block the Burkinabe people's march for
sovereignty and total freedom from terrorist hordes.
"Recall
that the junta took over following two military takeovers in the previous year,
which were exacerbated in part by an escalating insurgency by armed groups with
ties to al Qaeda and the Islamic State that had destabilized Burkina Faso and
its neighbors."
Captain
Ibrahim Traoré, the junta's leader, assumed control on September 30, 2022,
marking the country's second coup in eight months.
According
to GISTLOVER, there have been seven coups in Africa since 2020.
